THE PROJECT HAS THE OBJECTIVE OF PROTECTING AND PRESERVING THE UNIQUE HERITAGE AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF JERICO AND ITS REGION, WHILE SUPPORTING A SUSTAINABLE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ALLOWING A REGULATED BALANCED AND WELL DESIGNED GROWTH. Jericho’s history goes back over 10,000 years: it is the oldest urban settlement in the world and one of the first sites of agricultural development; it boasts an exceptional geographic position nested between mountains and desert, the river Jordan and the Dead Sea, 300 meters below sea level. As such, Jericho offers outstanding examples of biodiversity and cultural variety. The aims of the Jericho Master Plan are as follows: Preserve and promote these unique characteristics; Facilitate the development of a sustainable economy based on agriculture and tourism based on both cultural and natural attractions; Transform Jericho into an innovation laboratory for environmental conservation, given its role in the Jordan Valley. In addition to the above, proposals include the strengthening of the future role Jericho will play as the ‘door to Palestine’ to and for the rest of the world, via Jordan. read more close

Main outcome

The Jericho Master Plan constitutes an important element of the Palestinian Authority’s strategy for the territorial and economic organization of the Jordan Valley. This project protects and promotes the “spirit of Jericho”, embracing a unique cultural and environmental heritage which is one of Palestine’s main treasures. It fosters the development of a sustainable city based on the respect for natural resources, high quality agriculture, and an approach to tourism which is compatible with the cultural and environmental resources of the land. It allows for the revitalization and appreciation of a central component of Palestinian identity, and its preservation for future generations.

The direct beneficiary of the Master Plan is the population of Jericho itself that engages in agricultural and commercial activities, as well as tourist operators in the cultural and natural sectors. Furthermore, given the historical and symbolic role Jericho has played throughout the centuries, Palestinian society as a whole and the world at large will benefit from reuniting with this incomparable place, and promoting its model of sustainability and cultural variety to future generations.
