The project is implemented by the Italian NGO Mani Tese. The initiative wants to contribute to poverty reduction among the farmers living on the Molo River Basin, who constitute the 80% of the total population. The area depends on the two counties of Nakuru and Baringo, specifically from the administrative districts of Molo, Rongai, Mogoito and Marigat. The project aims to face the main problems affecting the area, which are the environmental degradation; the lack of local products trade-chains managed by the producers themselves and the weakness of the associations of the small producers. read more close

Main outcome

The direct beneficiaries of the project will be: 30 Community based organizations (about 750 people, mostly young men and 30% women); 7500 small producers (50% women; at least 10% female-headed households, elderly and disabled people); 500 young people (20% women); Students and teachers of 30 schools; Two already existing cooperatives (New Molo Potato Farmers Cooperative Society and Eldume Farmers Cooperative Society); 6.500 people between small agricultural farmers (5000) and livestock farmers (1500), of which the 30% is represented by women; 640 groups, associations and small cooperatives leaders and 2000 small producers.

The tree nursery's activity has been impacted by the drought, especially in the area of Marigat, but the provision of small pumps has improved the availability of water. The project has also encountered some delays in the construction of the warehouse for Molo cooperative and the warehouse for hides and skins in Marigat.
