The project intends to pioneer the sustainable domestic cultivation of healing herbs, which are crucial to the livelihoods of the population living in Son Dong district (Bac Giang province), largely composed by ethnic minorities. Furthermore, the project aims also to link cultivators to pharmaceutical companies as well as to raise awareness of local community about environmental protection. The number of people benefiting from the project, either directly or indirectly, is estimated to be over 70,000 units, ranging from residents and authorities to producers in the area of intervention. The project is completely in line with the National Plan to Alleviate Poverty in Vietnam. 1. Direct beneficiaries (3.312 people): - 225 families benefiting from the project (900 people); - 150 men and women living in Tuan Dao, An Ba e Tuan Mau communes that receive specific training on the establishment of nurseries garden; - 75 residents in other communes of the district that receive specific training on the establishment of nurseries garden; - the staff of Tay Yen Tu Natural Reserve (12 people) that receive training on how to create and nourish a seedling; - 9 producer associations that receive plant dryers, training on treating and conserving healing herbs and supports for product marketability; - all the students of 12 secondary schools involved (in total, 2.400 boys and girls at the age of 11-14); - the entire population of the district where activities intended for raising awareness take place (about 10.000 people). 2. Indirect beneficiaries (68.724 people living in Son Dong district - National Census 2009), in particular: - families and relatives of direct beneficiaries involved in the activities intended for training and nurseries establishment, treating and selling healing herbs; - all the producers in the district that have a seedling store for the acquisition of healing herbs which will be grown locally (roughly 95% of the population is employed in the primary sector); - district authorities benefiting from an alternative development pattern that can apply to other communes of the district and can also be used as a means for promoting tourism; - all the inhabitants of the district through the protection of biodiversity.
