THE PROJECT HAS THE OBJECTIVE OF PROTECTING AND PRESERVING THE UNIQUE HERITAGE AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF JERICO AND ITS REGION, WHILE SUPPORTING A SUSTAINABLE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ALLOWING A REGULATED BALANCED AND WELL DESIGNED GROWTH. Jericho’s history goes back over 10,000 years: it is the oldest urban settlement in the world and one of the first sites of agricultural development; it boasts an exceptional geographic position nested between mountains and desert, the river Jordan and the Dead Sea, 300 meters below sea level. As such, Jericho offers outstanding examples of biodiversity and cultural variety. The aims of the Jericho Master Plan are as follows: Preserve and promote these unique characteristics; Facilitate the development of a sustainable economy based on agriculture and tourism based on both cultural and natural attractions; Transform Jericho into an innovation laboratory for environmental conservation, given its role in the Jordan Valley. In addition to the above, proposals include the strengthening of the future role Jericho will play as the ‘door to Palestine’ to and for the rest of the world, via Jordan. read more close
