The project aims to support the National Rural Access Program (NRAP) in the Western Region of Afghanistan. NRAP is one of the most successful programs of the Afghan government and made possible the he construction of around 10.000 km of roads, creating millions of workdays and connecting hundreds of villages to the roads network. The specific objective of the project is to rehabilitate, reconstruct and maintain operational road infrastructures that are essential to guarantee the access of the rural communities to basic services, goods, and markets, through interventions that will favor the employment of local laborers. The project focuses on the construction of the bypass of Herat city, with a total length of around 45 km. The constructions is in two lots, respectively of 20km and 25km. The new bypass will prevent f heavy vehicles traffic from entering the city, improving the urban traffic, reducing the time of travel and improving the air quality. It will also facilitate connection between the roads toward the Iranian and the Turkmen borders with the ring road the main road infrastructure in the Country.
