The pilot initiative aims to demonstrate whether it is possible to measure the impact on the reading skills of three groups of out of school children, aged 4-10 years old, illiterate or with a low level of literacy, in rural areas of Ethiopia, through the self-utilization of tablets. This project idea moves from the consideration that more than 57 million children of primary school age in 2011 had no access to education and Ethiopia is one of the 4 countries in the world with the highest number out of school children of primary school age. The project, in collaboration the organization One Laptop per Child (OLPC), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tufts University and Georgia State University, has been launched in two rural areas of Ethiopia (Wenchi and Wolenchete) to which a third site has been added (Negelle). After the preliminary success in Ethiopia, the MIT has launched a global initiative on literacy ( that is currently implemented, besides Ethiopia, also in the USA, Uganda, India, South Africa and Bangladesh targeting children who can never go to school, children in severely overcrowded schools, children in kindergarten and children while learning at home. read more close
